How long does an RSA course take?

A Responsible Service of Alcohol (RSA Melbourne) course runs for 4 hours, as mandated by Liquor Control Victoria (LCV). No business or course can legally provide you with an RSA that will be valid after an RSA course than has spanned less than 4 hours in duration.

Not only does an RSA course in Australia have to be 4 hours in length, but Victorian RSA courses must be run in a classroom environment, with the student and the trainer physically in the same room. That is to say, for an RSA to be valid and legal in Victoria, the RSA course cannot be done online. Some states offers RSA courses online, but these RSAs will not be valid in Victoria. This is not to be confused with an “RSA refresher course”, which can only be done within 3 years of sitting a 4-hour, in classroom RSA with a training organisation registered and approved by LCV. RSAs can be refreshed and updated via an online course offered by LCV, but a person can only refresh their RSA if they have an existing RSA that was issued within 3 years, after sitting a 4 hour, in classroom, course with a Victorian registered RSA provider.

While 4 hours sounds like a long time, RSAs cover a wide range of topics to equip you with the skills, the knowledge, the confidence and the accreditation to serve alcohol in Victoria. The course covers

The course also simulates environments and scenarios students could likely find themselves in, and teaches students how to deal with these situations and how to react to different problems they may face surrounding the service of alcohol.
